چکیده

This paper provides a comprehensive study of the syndicate structure and its relationship to information asymmetry and loan spread by using principal component analysis on a large set of 40 structure-related variables. A total of six structure components are identified and related to syndicate quality, syndicate members’ heterogeneity or share concentration, lead arranger’s characteristics, lead lender’s or syndicate’s location, lender–borrower relationships, and lead institution type. In multivariate settings, all six components are significant determinants of loan spread, either directly or indirectly through their impact on other components. Lead share retention, previous lender–borrower relationships and syndicate quality are shown to be bilaterally related to loan spread. Structure components differ regionally, which can provide an explanation for the European pricing discount observed in the literature. An Asian discount is observed and cannot be explained by structure differences. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bank Capital Ratios, Competition and Loan Spreads

This paper empirically investigates whether or not banks charge higher loan spreads for having high capital ratios by using a dataset of all syndicated loans issued by public nonfinancial U.S. borrowers during the 1993 to 2007 period. We find convincing evidence that well-capitalized banks can indeed charge a ’spread premium’. We further investigate whether this result can be explained by banks...

This paper employs a novel, firm-level collective bargaining dataset, which is extracted directly from 10-K filings, to investigate the effect of labor, as an important stakeholder of a firm, on debt contracting. I find that employees’ collective bargaining power is positively associated with loan spreads despite the possible alignment of interests between employees and debt holders. Prior lite...

Syndication, Interconnectedness, and Systemic Risk∗

This paper studies the interconnectedness of banks in the syndicated loan market as a major source of systemic risk. We develop a set of novel measures to describe the "distance" (similarity) between two banks’syndicated loan portfolios and find that such distance explains how banks are interconnected in this market. As lead arrangers choose to work with those that have a similar focus in terms...
